Swoon Theory

Argument:

  • Jesus didn't actually die on the cross. He was crucified and came very close to death.

Rebuttal:

The following reasons are what make it impossible for Jesus to have survived His crucifixion

1. Jesus had gone through 6 trials in which He was beaten on the face
John 18:12-14;Matt 26:57-68; Matt. 27:1-2; John 18:28-38; Luke 23:6-12; John 18:39-19:6

2. Jesus had suffered 39 lashes with a flagrum, a short whip with several leather strips which were either embedded with pieces of metal and glass, or small metal balls which were tied to the ends of the leather strips.

3. A crown of thorns was placed upon His head which would have dug into his scalp

4. Jesus was givena purple robe that, when the blood would congeal and attach to the robe, would cause mor excessive pain and bleeding when the robe was torn off

5. Jesus underwent a Roman crucifixion. The Romans were known for being able to proficiently kill those hung on the cross.Arms would be pulled apart. The nails in the wrist would cause paralysis and more pain. To breath, jesus would have had to push up on the nails in his legs which would cause more bleeding and His heart to race. He would become dehydrated and have more labored breathing and cause Him to thirst. His heart would eventually rupture and cause the chest cavity to fill with fluid. The soldier pierced His side, causing blood and water to flow out meaning that His heart had stopped bleeding and blood had settled in the chest cavity.

6. Jesus' body was wrapped which was done tightly from head to toe.

7. Jesus was in the tomb for three days without medical attention

8. A large stone was placed in front of the tomb. Large enough for people to walk into, thus taking more than one person to move.

9. Guards were placed in front of the tomb since it was said that He would rise in three days so they were ready to meet that challenge

10. Jesus would have walked on pierced feet and a hole in his side to go and meet up with His disciples.
